panelistCharlie Vartanian

Charlie Vartanian is Director of Market Development at A123 Systems (www.a123systems.com). A123 is a manufacturer of advanced Lithium-ion batteries and systems. Charlie focuses on grid application development and market access advocacy to expand the use of advanced storage technologies for grid benefit. Previously, he was Distributed Energy Resource Development Manager at Southern California Edison where he supported and participated in joint research studies with external entities working on advanced grid concepts. Other prior engagements include SCE Transmission Planning, SCE Field Engineering, California Energy Commission Staff, Enron Energy Services, and the U.S. Navy. Charlie received his MSEE from USC, and his BSEE from Cal Poly Pomona. Charlie is a licensed Professional Engineer in California, and is a member of IEEE.


panelistThomas Noonan

Tom Noonan, president and CEO of JouleX, is also the former co-President & CEO founder and CEO of Internet Security Systems, which was acquired by IBM for $1.5 billion. Noonan and Chris Klaus launched ISS in 1994, taking it from a startup to nearly $400 million dollars by 2008. Prior to ISS, Noonan held senior positions at Dun & Bradstreet Software, where he was vice president, Worldwide Marketing. Before joining D&B Software, he specialized in automated control systems for computer-integrated manufacturing. Noonan also founded two successful technology companies: Actuation Electronics, a precision motion-control company and Leapfrog Technologies, a software development company. Noonan holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from Georgia Tech and a business degree from Harvard


panelistAnthony Maiello

Anthony Maiello, TAG Smart Grid Society Chairman of the Board; General Manager, Systems Engineering, General Electric Energy Group. Anthony joined GE as the Chief Engineer for Software in 2003 and later that year was named Technology GM for Network Reliability Products and Services (NRPS – T&D). In late 2005, Anthony developed and executed a vision to create a world-class global software architecture and engineering organization incorporating and integrating Energy Services software capabilities. In early 2006 the Software Solutions Group (SSG) was announced and formed. In April 2007, the Systems Engineering team was announced and formed with Anthony leading this organization as General Manager. Prior to GE, Anthony served as Director of Software Engineering for Reuters, Executive VP of Engineering for Prestige Software International, and Vice President of Security System Engineering for Honeywell.

Allan Schurr is responsible for IBM’s market strategy, regulatory policy, and partner management for the global electric, gas, and water industries. IBM’s solutions include customer management, smart grid, work & asset management, and distributed energy that leverage IBM’s innovation and integrate the breadth of IBM hardware, software, and services.


panelistNatalie Allen

Natalie Allen is an anchor for CNN International after having spent 10 years as an anchor for CNN domestic from 1992-2001. Allen also served as News Anchor for MSNBC. As a correspondent for NBC, she has appeared live on "The Nightly News," "The Today Show" and CNBC.

In her decade as a CNN domestic Anchor, she was on the air through critical moments in our nation's history including the Oklahoma City Bombing, the Presidential Election of 2000 and 9/11. She covered the 2004 Presidential Inauguration for MSNBC and reported live on the funeral for President Ronald Reagan in Washington.

For two years beginning in 2007, Allen served as The Weather Channel's first full-time environment and climate correspondent. As Primary Anchor for the network's weekly news program, "Forecast Earth," Allen traveled the country interviewing environmental pioneers and leaders in the green movement; sailing with arctic explorer Sir Robert Swan, diving with renown oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle among many others. She has also profiled the greenest CEO in the country, the greenest team in the NFL and green venture capitalists.

Allen also reported on local green innovators in "Forecast Earth's" segment "Grassroots Green," and in "Eco-Extremes," she shared the passion of people willing to do whatever it takes to raise awareness for environmental causes. She has conducted numerous interviews on climate science and environmental research with Weather Channel climatologists. She has written a weekly blog and contributed reports for WeatherChannel.com and appeared nightly on The Weather Channel with Forecast Earth Eco-Updates."

Allen started her career at WREG-TV in Memphis, Tennessee, becoming the first newsroom intern elevated to General Assignments Reporter while still a student. Three years later she was named Co-Anchor of WREG'S 10pm News.

At WFTV in Orlando, she covered the Kennedy Space Center and co-anchored the top-rated morning news show "Daybreak." She earned an Emmy Award and Edward R. Murrow Award for News Reporting and was voted "Favorite Morning Personality" by The Florida Today Newspaper.

Allen served for three years as the keynote speaker for Atlanta Magazine's "Women Making a Mark" Awards Program. She has been a guest speaker for numerous organizations and in 2008 was featured by Atlantan Magazine in an entitled article "The Green Queen." She was also interviewed by National Public Radio for her role at The Weather Channel in environmental reporting and "Forecast Earth."

She has also been featured in many news articles and magazines including The Commercial Appeal's Mid-South Magazine, Atlanta Magazine, Jezebel Magazine's "Most Beautiful Atlantans" and The Chicago Tribune.

She has appeared in the movies "Contact" and "Castaway" and was featured in an episode of the sitcom "Mad About You."
